CHAPTER 9
âMaddie dearest,â Cece squealed as she rushed over to embrace her dear friend. âYou look ravishing as always!â
The two women embraced fondly, laughing, and smiling while speaking over each other in a rush to say and hear everything at once.
âLet them at least take their coats off darling,â Charles suggested, motioning for Masterson to come, and assist the Earl and his Countess before escorting them into the formal drawing room.
Elizabeth felt ill at ease with this group, even though it was mostly the younger generation, only the Rotherford brotherâs, Cece, Elizabeth and the Saxtonâs. She had remembered when Lady Madeline had first come to town last season. And although they had never exchanged pleasantries, she had spoken to the Earl of Saxton a time or two and knew that he did not care for her. But honestly who in the ton did?
This all felt like stepping into the life that she had left behind, a life that she had no desire to go back to. Elizabeth desperately wanted to be anywhere, but in this blasted drawing room. Introductions were made, and courtesies were observed. Elizabeth survived through small talk, appetizers, a seven-course meal, and dessert. Thankfully Robert had stayed by her side through much of the evening.
As they were listening to Cece play the pianoforte, Robert came up behind her, warmth radiating through the back of her dress. He dipped his head low and whispered into her ear, âYou are the most beautiful woman here.â
Elizabeth scowled; she did not really understand complements and wished he would desist giving them. Robert laughed at her expression knowing just what she was thinking; his wifeâs thoughts were plain to see on her expressive face. He was apparently loud enough as to draw the attention of the rest of the dinner party.
âCare to share the joke with the rest of us, Robbie?â Spencer enquired curiously.
âJust enjoying the wit of my beautiful wife,â Robertâs eyes twinkled, and he nodded his head towards her as if giving her accolades.
Her eyes narrowed, two could play this game. âI do apologize for my husbandâs outburst. It would seem that he is a trifle disguised, must have been tipping the bottle again.â
For a moment, Robert stood there shocked, and then he burst into laughter, had she just told his family that he was intoxicated?
Spencer and Charles looked delighted at the latest twist in conversation.
Maddie smiled hesitantly, not sure if anyone was quite serious âI have never seen my husband three sheets to the wind. However, I am all agog. Tell me does he do this often?â
Elizabeth flushed beet red, âWhat had possibly possessed her to try and tease her handsome husband in front of his friends and family? She didnât even know how to tease. This was a complete nightmare.â
âNo,â she stammered, â...â
Robert saw that Elizabeth was panicking did the first thing that came to his mind, if she claimed he was drunk, he would be the best damn drunk they had ever seen.
âNow sweetness,â he stumbled up to her and nuzzled his face right into her bosom.
